BERNAMA Names Datuk Mokhtar Hussain as Acting EIC

The Malaysian National News Agency BERNAMA has announced the appointment of Datuk Mokhtar Hussain, 58, as Acting Editor-in-Chief effective 24 June 2019. He succeeds Datuk Zakaria Abdul Wahab, 62, who completes his contract as BERNAMA’s Editor-in-Chief on 22 June 2019.

BERNAMA expresses its sincere appreciation and gratitude to Datuk Zakaria for his long years of service, including the past five years as Editor-in-Chief. Said Datuk Seri Azman Ujang, Chairman of BERNAMA, “I would like to convey my sincere thanks to Datuk Zakaria for his loyal service. He has shown tremendous dedication and commitment to journalism and to BERNAMA for 39 years”.

Datuk Mokhtar is currently Deputy Editor-in-Chief for the General News Service. He has a strong track record in journalism spanning 34 years, having joined BERNAMA in January 1985. He started his career as a News Executive and has held various positions, including as Sabah Bureau Chief and also as News & Current Affairs Manager, Audio Visual Service. His appointment as Acting Editor-in-Chief will ensure editorial continuity while BERNAMA commences on its organisational and newsroom transformation in order to meet the digital challenges faced by media the world over.


Datuk Mokhtar holds a master’s degree in Business Law from the National University of Malaysia and a bachelor’s degree with honours in Jurisprudence from the University of Malaya, as well as a bachelor’s degree with honours in Mass Communication from the National University of Malaysia.
