Malaysian Gas Association (MGA) in collaboration with Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) has recently organised a Workshop on the Benefits of Cogeneration in the Digital Industry that was attended by digital investors and data centers.
Aimed to increase awareness of Cogeneration application in data centers, the workshop provided participants with an overview of Cogeneration technology, its application and how significant improvements in efficiency of energy conversion can be achieved. The half-day workshop also featured an exhibition from Cogeneration industry players, both local and international.
According to Abdul Aziz Othman, President of Malaysian Gas Association, MGA has been proactively taking part in engagements and dialogues with key stakeholders to promote and advocate for greater adoption of Cogeneration in the country. This includes participation in national policy drafting committees including for the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act (EECA) that is reported to be tabled in Parliament next year. It has been an important mission led by MGA in promoting greater adoption of Cogeneration that will support achieving national energy efficiency targets set under the National Energy Efficiency Action Plan (2016- 2025).
“The development of energy-efficient technologies is of major importance for sustainable development efforts towards achieving our sustainability agenda. We believe that Cogeneration will significantly contribute towards helping Malaysia achieve its sustainability targets of 8% savings in energy efficiency by 2025 and a reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 45% by 2030. Cogeneration is an efficient and cleaner way of generating electric power and thermal energy from a single fuel source. As energy security, affordability and sustainability arise, energy efficiency will be an important driver to make sure the priority is rightly addressed and achieve our sustainability aspirations” he added.
“MGA offers to proactively partake should the Government decide to draft the next period of National Energy Efficiency Action Plan 2026-2035,” said Abdul Aziz.
MGA will continue to promote greater adoption of cogeneration through engagements and awareness programs designed to discuss the potential and opportunities for cogeneration in supporting the nation’s aspiration to fulfil its climate change commitment under the Paris Agreement and Low Carbon Nation by 2040.
